What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements When children arrive from school, staff greet them warmly. Some children are eager to talk to staff about their day and staff make time to listen to them.

Children understand the club routines and boundaries. They know where to put their belongings when they arrive, and they line up to wash their hands. The staff have implemented the routine for handwashing on arrival to promote children's continuing good health.

Children help each other to find things they want. Older children demonstrate to their younger friends how to use a scooter. The relationships between staff and children are positive.

Staff help children ...to learn how to play games, such as dominoes. They carefully look at the dots and select which one to place down for their turn. Children work well together.

They make friendships and have good natured discussions with one another. They patiently wait their turn either to use the games console or the bicycles and scooters outside. Children enjoy the staff's involvement in their play.

Staff comment on how well children are doing, which helps to promote their confidence and self-esteem. For example, children keep trying to use the play dough tools and are successful in making a variety of different shapes.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

The club leader works effectively with the small staff team.

Staff are supported through ongoing daily reflection and discussions. This contributes to staff being confident in their role to keep children safe and meet their needs. Staff supervise children well and they ensure that children who are new to the club feel safe and get to know the routines.

The staff get to know children and their families well and they listen to the children's ideas about what they want to do. Children can choose their own activities and they help tidy away when they have finished playing. The staff have designed a welcoming environment.

However, they provide a large number of resources, which makes it difficult for some children to decide what they want to select.Staff are consistent in their approach when supporting children with their behaviour. This helps children to understand the expectations for their behaviour and to treat others with respect.

Children show positive behaviour and confidence while at the club. Children are curious and interested in their chosen activities and spend periods of time concentrating on games and craft activities. Children listen to staff, for example, when they explain it is time to return inside and to wash their hands after digging in the mud.

Staff encourage children to be independent and to make decisions for themselves. When children arrive, some choose to have their snack immediately and others wait until later. Parents provide their children's snack and staff encourage healthy choices.

Staff speak to children to help them learn about how to keep themselves safe, such as when they use outdoor equipment and the internet.Staff promote children's speaking and listening skills. For example, children playing with dolls and a play doctors set listen as staff explain what the thermometer does.

Children turn the dial and show others, saying, 'Baby is too hot and needs medicine.' Staff ensure they are available to speak to children when they arrive from school. They check in with children, who share any worries that they have spoken to their teacher about.

Children benefit from the consistent approach and effective partnership working between the club staff, parents and the school. Any relevant messages are passed on to ensure that children's needs can be met. Staff provide feedback to parents when they arrive to collect their children about their time at the club, the activities they have enjoyed and any messages from school.
