Nobody wants a long commute to work, especially not on today’s overcrowded and expensive
trains. But finding where to live for that ideal commute is surprisingly difficult.
You could spend ages on the National Rail journey planner, or some other equivalent
train website, but it’ll take you forever to check all the possible journeys.
We personally came across this problem in 2012 when trying to decide where to live
next and, being a professional software developer, I decided to write a tool to visualise
all National Rail train journeys in a clear and concise fashion so we could
make an informed decision ourselves as to where to move to.
It was a very interesting project. There are some famous commuting towns I had heard
of, such as Sevenoaks and Leighton Buzzard for commuting to London, but I was never
exactly sure why they were so popular. Visualise the journey times and it all becomes
clear. These towns have almost direct trains, which vastly reduce journey times
compared to stations that are much closer to London. You get all the benefits of
living away from the city but don’t have a sole destroying journey to work each
Firstly you need to know where you want to commute to. Either select one of our
predefined areas (e.g. Central London) or type in the name of one or more stations
that you are prepared to commute to.
Our software will calculate thousands of journey times for you; in fact it
calculates the journey time from every other National Rail station to your destination(s)
and, where the journey is within your acceptable range, it displays the station
neatly on the map with a marker that indicates the length of commute.
Commute times are calculated using the fastest trains from one National Rail station
to another based on travelling during rush hour on a Monday morning; so they are
representative of a typical commute. For multiple destinations, stations
are selected based on the fastest time to any one of the listed stations, e.g. if
you enter London Euston, London Bridge then the shortest journey to either
London Euston or London Bridge is used when chosing which stations to display
on the map.
You can filter the stations displayed on the map using the filters in the 'Options'
section. Only stations that have journeys to the specified destination(s) that conform
to the specified options will be displayed on the map.
Click a station marker on the map to view the journey to the selected destination
(including journey time and changes). Where multiple destinations are found the
shortest journey to any one of the destinations will be displayed. Use the 'Station
Information' link to find out more details about a station (e.g. if it has a car
park, wheelchair access, cycle storage etc.) and the 'Season ticket prices' link
to calculate the latest season ticket prices.
For many, your area search is being performed in conjunction with a property search.
We’ve partnered with Zoopla to provide properties currently for sale or rent. The
properties displayed on this site are fed live from Zoopla, removing the
need to keep switching between our commuting map and property portals.
Tick 'Local property prices' to include property prices in each stations' pop-up
window. Prices are calculated from Land Registry data and include averages for the
stations' post code, wider local area and the nation as a whole; broken down by
property type. Showing property prices may slow down the searching slightly.
The following operators are included in our commute calculations: Arriva
Trains Wales, c2c, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Coast, East Midlands Trains,
First Capital Connect, First Great Western, First ScotRail, Gatwick Express, Grand
Central Railway, Greater Anglia, Heathrow Connect, Heathrow Express, Hull Trains,
Island Line, London Midland, London Overground, London Underground, Merseyrail,
Northern Rail, South West Trains, Southeastern, Southern, Transpennine Express and
Improvements can always be made so if there is a feature you would like to see here
then please let us know.
If you discover something missing or wrong please let us know
so we can look into it as a matter of urgency.
