What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision does not meet requirements Leadership and management are not effective in ensuring that the club runs smoothly. This results in the environment sometimes not being safely organised, or miscommunication about which children are due to attend.

Leaders and managers' oversight is not sufficient to identify and address issues swiftly. They do not take prompt action to ensure that children can play in a safe and suitably organised environment. On occasion, this means children play around potential hazards.

Due to their familiarity with their school environment, children are confident here. They move around freely. For example, they independently a...ccess their water bottles when they are thirsty.

Children enter happily and are eager to see their friends. They enjoy the opportunities to be creative and they are confident to ask staff for additional resources to complete their pictures. However, leaders and staff do not consistently support children to understand their expectations for behaviour.

Poor staff deployment means that children have to wait for an extended period for the environment to be ready for them to play. At times, there is limited interaction from staff, which results in children becoming restless and frustrated.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

Monitoring and oversight are not effective.

Following an incident when a parent was not notified that a child had not transferred to the club from school as expected, leaders took some action to try and prevent a recurrence. For example, they met with leaders from the host school and reviewed procedures for the collection of children from their classes and for registering their attendance. However, leaders have not ensured that staff consistently implement these procedures.

This means that there continues to be times that staff do not accurately know how many children are in attendance and who they are responsible for. This compromises children's safety.Communication with staff at the host school is not robust.

In addition to a previous mix-up about a child's after-school care arrangements, on the day of the inspection, leaders and staff were not aware that the school hall had been rearranged in preparation for the school's Christmas events. Staff struggled to adapt their plans and reorganise their use of the space to ensure the safety of the children. This hinders the ability of leaders and managers to identify potential risks to children, and to provide a safe and well-organised provision for children's play and care.

Staff do not support children to behave well or help children understand the club's rules. They do not plan and set up the play space and activities in readiness for children's arrival. Children have to wait for over 15 minutes until the environment is made safe and is ready for them to play.

This results in children becoming boisterous. When staff instruct children to stop certain behaviours, such as rocking on chair legs or not playing near the stacked chairs, they do not provide any explanations. This does not help children learn how to behave in ways that keep them safe.

Staff support children to develop strong relationships with each other. At times, older children confidently help their younger friends understand what is happening next and how to join in games. Younger children develop some confidence from this friendly support.

Staff support children's creativity. For example, as children cut snowflakes out of paper, staff model how to fold the paper and use the scissors to create their chosen design. Children take pride in what they have achieved.

Staff provide a range of healthy drinks and snacks that meet the children's individual dietary needs. Children sit together at snack time and enjoy lively conversations about their day and are invited to make suggestions about what they want to do that evening. Children are aware of the need to access drinks to remain hydrated.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.Weaknesses in leadership and management result in poor organisation that compromises children's safety. Leaders fail to ensure that staff implement effective procedures to help keep children safe.

However, they do ensure that staff understand how to identify and respond to child protection concerns. The provider takes relevant steps to ensure that staff who work with the children are suitable.
