What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Children arrive happy at the end of the school day and are clearly familiar with the routines in place. They take responsibility for their own belongings. Children place their coat and school bag in the designated area and eagerly greet their friends and familiar staff.

Children demonstrate they feel secure as they approach visitors and chat confidently with them. They demonstrate a fantastic sense of humour as they interact and share jokes. Children show that they are confident, settled and independent.

They quickly choose their own play and concentrate on completing tasks. For instance, children spend time making bracele...ts from rubber bands. Once finished, they kindly offer the manager one for her wrist.

Children have access to a large number of resources. They know where everything is and keenly help themselves as they follow their own interests. Children enjoy being physically active in the large, well-equipped outdoor play environment.

They thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to play football or run and chase each other on the field. Children of all ages play well together. When asked what they like about the club, children say, 'I like the teachers; they are all very kind.'



What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

The provider has high expectations of the service staff provide for children and their families. The small staff team works well to promote the club's ethos and policies. The provider and some staff work together in another local setting and also in the host school.

This teamwork contributes to continuity of care for children.The provider conducts one-to-one meetings with staff. This allows her to identify areas for development and plan additional training opportunities.

Staff help to identify further training they would like to extend their knowledge. This positive approach to ongoing development ensures staff keep up to date with changes in practice and helps to improve the support they offer to children.Staff support children to be confident communicators.

They interact well with children, make good eye contact and get down to their level. Staff engage children in conversations, narrate children's play and ask them open-ended questions to encourage their thinking skills.Staff are good role models.

They subtly model good manners and remind children to say 'please' and 'thank you' should they forget. Staff show a genuine interest in what children have to say. They involve and value children's views and opinions as they take part in group discussions.

This helps to build children's self-esteem and promotes a positive sense of well-being in the club.Teatime is a relaxed and sociable occasion. Staff sit alongside children who decide which friends they would like to sit with.

The food offered is healthy and nutritious. Children follow robust hygiene practices. They know that they need to wash their hands before eating and after using the bathroom.

Children benefit from daily opportunities to have fresh air and exercise after a long school day. They confidently negotiate the tricky trim trail. Children safely swing, balance and jump on large apparatus.

This contributes to a healthy lifestyle.Safety in the club is given high priority. The building is secure, and visitors sign in and out of the club.

Staff sign the children out as they leave at the end of their session and make a note of who collected them. Staff supervise children well as they use different areas of the host school. They remind children to use equipment safely and encourage children to identify possible risks for themselves.

Parents spoken to during the inspection state they are very happy with the service that staff offer. They confirm they feel the club is a reliable and flexible service which meets the needs of local families. They comment that their children 'love playing with children who are non-class friends' and state their children complain when they collect them early and want to stay longer.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.The provider and staff have a secure knowledge of the referral process to follow if they have concerns about a child's welfare. They are knowledgeable about the signs and symptoms that could indicate a child is at risk of harm.

Staff complete ongoing safeguarding and first-aid training. The provider organises regular safeguarding quizzes to test staff's child protection knowledge. Staff keep suitable records of any minor accidents children sustain.

The provider follows a safer recruitment procedure to ensure the suitability of new staff. Checks are undertaken to ensure that existing staff remain suitable to work with children. This helps to promote children's safety.
