What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision does not meet requirements The management of the after-school club is poor. This has resulted in breaches of the statutory requirements, which compromise children's safety.

The provider fails to keep accurate records of children's attendance. Furthermore, some records are not made easily accessible, as they are stored off site. The provider does not ensure that there is a named manager in place, to have oversight of the day-to-day running of the club.

That said, although the inspection has identified breaches in legal requirements, staff do want the best for children. Staff warmly welcome children as they are collected from their classrooms ...at the end of the school day. For some younger children and those who are new to the club, staff recognise the impact of these new routines.

They offer reassurance and get to know children well. Staff are respectful and kind. Children are happy and their behaviour is extremely good.

Staff provide children with choices and a variety of activities that take account of their current interests. For instance, children excitedly choose colouring sheets with pictures of their favourite characters. This sparks conversations between older and younger children, as they share their ideas about what colours they will need.

Children share pens and pencils and older children help their younger friends find the colours they need.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

The provider's lack of oversight of the setting has resulted in breaches of requirements. Children's attendance times are not recorded accurately, or maintained where staff who work with children can access them.

This means that in the event of an emergency evacuation, staff cannot be sure which children are present and which children have left for the day. Furthermore, on the day of the inspection, some records were not accessible as they are stored away from the premises. This compromises children's safety.

The provider does not have a clear management structure in place. There is no named manager in the after-school club. The provider does not ensure that staff who take senior roles are aware of their roles and responsibilities in these positions, and they are, therefore, unclear how to meet them.

That said, staff say they enjoy working at the setting and feel they are valued and supported.Staff have a clear plan for children at the club. They offer a range of experiences, tailored for the differing ages and abilities of children who attend.

Children are able to have a voice in the club, as staff listen to their ideas and incorporate these in planned activities during the term. For instance, children talk excitedly about planting grass heads in the future and ask for bracelet making, as they happily talk about what they intend to create today. Children thoroughly enjoy choosing what to do and demonstrate positive and enthusiastic attitudes towards their play.

There is a very happy atmosphere in the club, as staff work hard to ensure children feel welcomed and well cared for. Staff are good role models for children. They are polite and courteous and take the time to listen to younger and quieter children.

Opportunities for children to take lead roles in helping their friends are supported well by staff. For instance, children help to put away school bags, ensuring they are stored safely. Staff praise children and actively promote their good levels of confidence and self-esteem.

Parents and children speak highly of the club. They say that staff ensure children feel welcomed and offer a variety of activities, which children enjoy. Parents say that they get daily updates about their children, including their day at school, and feel their children are happy at the club.

Children say that they like coming to the club, to play games, make things and spend time with their friends.Staff successfully help children to lead a healthy lifestyle. Children choose from a range of options during a sociable snack time.

Staff talk to children about the choices they make, as children discuss foods they like and dislike and those that are healthier choices.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.Weaknesses in the provider's procedures for recording children's attendance mean that safety is potentially compromised.

That said, staff ensure that children are supervised at all times. The provider follows robust recruitment processes, to ensure that staff are suitable to work with children. Staff have a good knowledge of safeguarding, including signs and indicators of possible abuse.

They understand their roles in protecting children from harm and what actions to take if they have any concerns about children's welfare. They understand the procedures to follow if they have any concerns about their colleagues' behaviour towards children.
