Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school Leaders have taken prompt and effective action to address the weaknesses identified at the May 2017 inspection. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

The strengths in the school's safeguarding arrangements, reported in May, continue to be in place. The support provided to pupils who have medical needs is now thorough and effective. Governors hold leaders stringently to account for pupils' welfare and development.

Attendance overall is better than the national average and disadvantaged pupils' attendance is improving. A small number of disadvantaged pupils' attendance remains too low. Leaders are aware of the issues and working ...to improve this so that their progress is not hindered.

The school's assessment information shows that current pupils' performance is good. This includes stronger progress in mathematics than in the recent past. Leaders and governors have recently introduced a new assessment system that already provides useful information on pupils' progress.

Governors hold leaders and staff firmly to account for pupils' performance. Disadvantaged pupils' performance is rapidly improving. This is because of more targeted use of pupil premium funding and careful scrutiny of leaders' strategies by governors.

Pupils' personal development is well supported by the variety of enrichment activities that the school offers alongside personal, social, health and economic ( ) education. Pupils are well prepared for life after school and understand how to keep themselves safe and healthy. Leaders have improved teaching and learning through effective professional development for teachers and reduced staff turnover.

However, sometimes activities for lower-ability pupils are too hard and so their progress is hindered. Leaders have sustained the improvements in the sixth form since the previous inspection. It is now good.

Variability in teaching and learning has been addressed. Leaders are ensuring that new assessment information is used sharply to raise outcomes at A level for current students.
