Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school Leaders and governors are ambitious for all pupils. They have successfully reversed the decline in standards since the last inspection. Leadership at all levels is strong and improving rapidly thanks to some astute appointments.

There is a strong capacity to ensure continued improvement. Leaders and staff provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is enhanced by a range of extra-curricular events and activities for pupils. Strong leadership and effective teaching have led to sustained improvements in standards of attainment and rates of progress in reading, writing and mathematics by the end of key stage 2.

The proportion of pupils in k...ey stage 1 who attained at greater depth in reading, writing and mathematics increased to above the national average in 2018. Teachers use good subject knowledge and effective questioning to develop and deepen pupils' knowledge and understanding across the curriculum. Safeguarding is effective.

Pupils, staff, parents and carers agree that pupils are safe in school and that instances of bullying are rare. Pupils' attitudes to learning, and their behaviour around school, are good. They treat others with kindness and respect.

Leadership and teaching in the early years are good. Children are well prepared for the demands of Year 1. Attainment at the expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics at the end of key stage 1 has been below the national average over time.

The teaching of phonics is not consistently good. The proportion of pupils who achieve the expected standard in the phonics screening check is consistently below the national average. Occasionally, teachers set work that is not well matched to the needs of all abilities.

When this happens, pupils lose focus and their learning slows.
