Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school Leaders and governors have ensured that pupils have sustained good progress during a significant period of staff change since the last inspection. Teachers contribute well to the assessment of pupils' progress towards learning intentions in their education, health and care (EHC) plans. However, some teachers' evaluations are not as sharp as they might be.

Teachers and additional adults plan effective lessons in English, mathematics and other subjects which engage pupils' interest. However, some teaching is not skilled enough in deciding when and how to introduce greater challenge. The curriculum provides good opportunities for pupils to acquire a ...broad and balanced education.

However, leaders are continuing to improve the way they use information to make further improvements to the curriculum. Leaders have an accurate view of the strengths and weaknesses of teaching. However, there is some variability in how well subject leaders use information to evaluate the impact of teaching over time.

Pupils typically behave well and demonstrate positive attitudes to learning. Punctuality has improved, though attendance for some pupils remains too low. Governors and the local authority offer suitable support and challenge for leaders.

The 16 to 19 study programmes are well led. The provision ensures that students build well on their previous achievement and prepares them effectively for the next stage in their education or first steps into employment or training. Provision for pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural education is strong.

Pupils with a wide range of needs access and enjoy an impressive breadth of experiences and opportunities to contribute to their community. Additional funding for disadvantaged pupils is used effectively.

Information about this school

Pupils attending the school all have moderate learning difficulties, a diagnosis of autism or speech, language and communication needs.

All the students have an EHC plan. Pupils come from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds. A small proportion of these speak English as an additional language.

The proportion of disadvantaged pupils entitled to the pupil premium is above the national average. The school does not use alternative provision. The number of boys far exceeds the number of girls on roll.
