Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school Leaders and trustees know the school well. Their self-evaluation of the school is accurate The principal has sustained good leadership and teaching through a period of extensive staff change with the effective support of the trust.

Funding for pupils with special educational needs and additional funding for disadvantaged pupils is spent appropriately to ensure that pupils typically sustain good progress from their varied starting points. Teachers and additional adults use expertise in helping pupil communicate to ensure that they participate fully in lessons and understand how well they are doing. Pupils who can learn to read, write and use number... make reasonable progress in acquiring these skills but are not always challenged enough.

Pupils are supported particularly well in their physical development. The recently revised curriculum provides two pathways to help pupils deepen their knowledge and broaden their skills. However, opportunities for older pupils to learn skills to promote independence in adulthood are limited.

Teachers use resources effectively. However, the range of books available to pupils is narrow. The early years provision helps children gain access to learn and make progress from very low starting points.

However, access to the outdoor area could be improved. Leaders ensure that students are well prepared for 16 to 19 study programmes. Governors benefit from wide-ranging information to help them challenge leaders.

The trustees offer strong support. Pupils behave well and commit to learning in lessons. Teachers are skilled in helping pupils who find it hard to manage their behaviour.

Safeguarding is effective. Leaders make sure that staff are well trained to recognise and respond to predominant risks to pupils.

Information about this school

Ravensbourne School opened as a new academy in 2016.

It is part of the Hornbeam Academy Trust, which includes two other special schools in North East London. The board of trustees, which includes the chief executive officer, is responsible for the school's work. A local governing body currently has a monitoring role but no delegated powers.

Six students are currently educated off-site at another school in the academy in order to pursue a different curriculum pathway. Almost all of the 87 pupils on roll have education, health and care plans. All attend full time except for four children who attend the school part-time in the early years setting.

Pupils come from eight different London boroughs. Pupils have a wide range of special needs which mean that they are at a severely delayed stage of development relative to their age. The school has a specialist setting for six pupils with significant needs due to autistic spectrum disorders.

The proportion of disadvantaged pupils is well above the national average. The principal took up her post in September 2017. She has been joined by two deputy principals who began work at the school in the same week as this inspection.
