Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school The headteacher and senior leadership team ensure that all staff have very high expectations for all pupils. They ensure that teaching is continuing to improve, with nothing less than good and with much that is outstanding. Where any aspects of provision have needed improvement, leaders have systematically and successfully addressed them.

Leaders have effective plans in place to deal with any remaining weaknesses. Governors are exceptionally effective in their role. They monitor all aspects of the school precisely and challenge leaders to achieve even higher outcomes, wherever they can.

Teachers skilfully question pupils, accurately asses...s them and give them exciting and challenging work matched very well to their ability. Much of the teaching is of an outstanding quality. The teaching of phonics is particularly strong.

Published test results in English and mathematics show that pupils make good levels of progress overall, with many of these significantly greater than other pupils nationally. Results show that attainment is similarly high over time. The most able pupils make particularly brisk progress, because teachers give them work that consistently makes them think deeply.

Pupils are extremely well behaved, reflective and highly caring towards each other. They are, rightly, proud of their school and work their hardest even when teaching is not outstanding. They have a very clear understanding of how to stay safe.

Children get off to a good start in the Reception Year. Caring staff quickly make them feel safe and keen to learn as much as they can. Children concentrate on what they are doing and are not distracted.

However, staff in the early years do not ensure that the outdoor area in the Reception classes promotes children's learning as well as the indoor classroom. As a result, children do not yet learn rapidly overall during their time in the early years. Pupils have not made rapid progress in writing in all year groups in key stage 2 because minor weaknesses in teaching remain.

A small minority of teachers do not give pupils sufficient guidance on how to improve their basic skills in their writing. Pupils do not make sustained and substantial progress in science. Although pupils enjoy this subject, they do not receive enough opportunities to think through and complete scientific investigations.
