They know what staff expect of them, such as to wash their hands before entering the club, in order to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Children use their named equipment for drawing and writing. They engage well in these activities and talk together about their pictures.

They know that they can ask staff to get out more toys or resources that they want to use. Children...'s behaviour is good. They play well together and develop strong friendships within their peer groups.

Children are encouraged to develop healthy lifestyles. They spend prolonged lengths of time outdoors. Children play energetically and enjoy the fresh air.

They have many opportunities for climbing and space to run around or play ball games. Children enjoy healthy snacks consisting of fruit and rice cakes and they always have their own bottle of water with them. They understand the need to keep hydrated when they get hot from physical activity.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

Children are very welcoming and confidently engage in conversations with visitors. They are proud to talk about and show examples of activities that they have been involved with. Children demonstrate a strong sense of belonging to the club.

The staff team is highly qualified, well established and turnover is low. The provider has robust recruitment procedures in place. This helps to ensure that staff are suitable to work with children.

There are clear and consistent systems in place to monitor staff practice and ensure that their skills continue to develop over time.Children form close, trusting relationships with staff, who are warm, friendly and approachable. Staff treat all children with respect and give them time to express their views.

A regular children's forum meeting is held where children can discuss ideas and formulate plans. In the past, these have led to themed weeks where children learn about each other's cultures and families.Children are able to negotiate and problem solve for themselves.

During racing games, they discuss roles and rules. The designated 'judge' knows that they have the right to enforce rules, such as having to rerun a race as participants take a short cut. At other times, children reject staff's suggestions of how minor conflicts can be resolved as they have their own solutions and ideas.

Partnerships with the host school are strong. The youngest children are brought to the club by the same members of staff each day. This gives staff opportunities to speak to children's teachers or teaching assistants and they can share relevant information.

Staff have effective hygiene procedures in place. All resources and equipment are thoroughly cleaned at the end of each session. The jackets worn by the children outside are washed daily.

Staff talk about how they risk assess all activities in line with COVID-19 regulations to help them keep children safe and well.Parents speak highly about the club and staff. They say that they have peace of mind that children are safe and enjoying themselves at the club.

Parents say that when they arrive to collect their children they are always highly engaged in activities and are reluctant to leave until they have finished.Managers and staff effectively evaluate the service they provide and look for ways to improve. They seek the views of children and incorporate their ideas into practice.

They occasionally ask parents for their feedback. However, the manager reports that this has not been consistent over the last year.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

Staff demonstrate a good understanding of how to recognise potential signs of abuse. They know the procedures to follow if they have concerns about a child's welfare or the conduct of a member of staff. They talk confidently about what they would do if they felt children were at risk of harm.

All staff know how to swiftly make referrals both within the setting and to relevant agencies. They complete safeguarding training through induction and at regular intervals. This helps all staff to keep their knowledge relevant and up to date.
