What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Children arrive happily and look forward to attending the club after school. Staff make children feel welcome and ask them about their day. Children have access to a range of resources and games to play with.

Staff plan creative activities for children linked to celebrations and festivals that are happening at that time. For example, children enjoy doing crafts to celebrate the upcoming Queen's Jubilee. The club is based in the school dining hall and children have access to the playground.

They enjoy using outdoor equipment, such as balls and skipping ropes, to play games that support their physical development. Staff join... in with children's play and help children to practise their basketball and football skills. Children manage risks well as they carefully climb the large adventure play equipment.

Staff support children's mental well-being. They encourage children to talk about their feelings and emotions. Children confidently share something about their school day that they are proud of.

During mental health week, staff and children created a 'positivity jar'. Children enjoy writing notes about positive things that make them happy, to go into it. Children say that they feel safe at the club.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

Staff have clear expectations for children's behaviour. They are good role models for children and encourage them to be polite and well mannered. Children are kind and respectful towards each other.

They behave well and enjoy playing with children of different ages.Staff provide a safe environment for children to wind down in after their school day. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, children sit at tables to engage in activities and play a range of games that are available.

Some older children comment that they get bored of the same games on offer. Staff are aware of this and are beginning to give children more opportunity to choose new resources they would like, based on their interests.Children know the routines of the club well.

Staff provide healthy breakfast options and snacks for children. Children understand the importance of handwashing and manage their own personal hygiene effectively.Good partnership working with schools enables staff to have a better understanding of the needs of children who attend.

They have good relationships with class teachers and share important information with them after the breakfast club. This supports children's emotional well-being throughout the day.Parents share positive views about the club and comment that staff are friendly and approachable.

They are pleased that their children enjoy attending. Staff gather information from parents to ensure they meet children's individual needs, particularly those with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Two-way communication is effective and parents regularly receive emails and newsletters, and have the opportunity to give feedback about the club.

The manager and staff work cohesively to ensure the effective running of the club. The manager is reflective and regularly evaluates practice and procedures to identify areas to improve.Staff feel well supported by the manager.

All staff attend mandatory training, such as first aid and safeguarding, to keep their knowledge up to date. The manager ensures that safer recruitment practices are in place and provides a supportive induction period to new members of staff. Staff have supervisions with the manager and receive ongoing support from her.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.Staff are aware of their roles and responsibilities to keep children safe. They know the signs and symptoms that may indicate that a child is at risk of harm.

Staff know the correct procedures to follow if they have concerns about children's safety or well-being. They know the contact details to report a concern to the local authority. Staff are familiar with the whistle-blowing procedures and know what to do if they have concerns about staff conduct.
