What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Children are very happy to attend this nurturing and welcoming environment. They come into club ready to relax and have fun after a busy day in school.

Children understand and carry out routines to help keep themselves safe and promote their well-being. When they arrive in club, children automatically sanitise their hands and line up to have their temperatures checked. They understand the club rules in place to support their good health.

For example, when stricter restrictions were in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, children stayed in year groups or with siblings to help reduce the risk of infection. At snack time, chi...ldren choose from the healthy foods and drinks available. They sit in groups and enjoy socialising with their peers and staff.

Children are confident and independent. The experiences available are based on children's interests and they select what they want to do while at club. Children are invited to decide if they want to do something inside or play outside in the school grounds.

Some children sit with peers to complete homework, with staff close by to assist if needed. Each evening they also have opportunity to choose to take part in a planned creative activity. Alternatively, they ask for games or resources from the cupboard or select from those set out.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

Staff know the children well. They adopt a caring approach to all children and positive relationships are formed. Staff focus on supporting children's well-being and provide plenty of opportunities for children to share their views and feelings.

Children are polite, respectful and considerate. They behave well and show that they feel safe and secure at club. Children take care of their belongings as they place coats and bags on the pegs.

They put drawings and creations away ready to share with their families and are keen to take extra pictures to complete at home.Children interact well with staff, chatting to them about their day at school and inviting them to join in with activities. Children confidently speak with inspectors about how happy they are at club and about what they enjoy doing while they are here.

The club is situated in a large school hall and spaces are organised for children to move and play effectively. Throughout the session, children select from the varied resources and equipment available. They also help to tidy up and make space inside for more physical activities using hoops and soft balls, when the weather is bad, and it is too icy to play outside.

Staff help children to make new friends with others who attend from different schools or year groups. Children enjoy finding out about the local and wider community and different faiths. They take part in varied creative experiences and learn about cultures, festivals and celebrations, which are different from their own.

Staff access varied training and conduct research online to enhance their understanding and keep their knowledge and skills up to date. They explain how the manager and provider are very encouraging and how this has helped them to develop confidence in their abilities and ensure their practice continually improves.The partnership between staff at club and staff in the host school is effective.

There are good opportunities to exchange information and pass on messages for and from parents. That said, staff recognise that ongoing communication with teachers could be further developed to benefit the children. For example, staff are keen to find out more about what children are learning in school.

This is so they can provide activities to complement or build on prior learning or if there are areas that they could offer more support to children in.Parents are delighted with the care their children receive. They say that staff are friendly, approachable and knowledgeable and that they work closely together to exchange information and ensure children are happy.

Parents explain that children often do not want to go home, as they have so much fun at club and are keen to continue playing with their friends.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.The club is a safe and secure environment for children.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, staff ensure procedures are followed to reduce the risk of infection. Staff wear face masks and request that the inspectors do the same. When parents arrive, they wait in the entrance area for children to gather their belongings and be brought out to be collected.

The provider follows robust recruitment and vetting procedures to ensure the staff are suitable to work at club. She and her staff keep their knowledge of child protection up to date and communicate with the host school as appropriate. They understand their responsibilities to assure children's safety and to record and report any worries about a child or a colleague's conduct.
