What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Children are happy and relaxed.

They are warmly welcomed as they come into the setting and begin to select from a range of activities. Children enjoy being at the setting and talk about how they make choices themselves. For example, children comment that they love the craft activities saying, 'I can get creative anytime I want to and do art.'

Children respond well to the staff's positive interactions with them. There is a quiet hum of activity in every corner of the setting with children busying themselves at their tasks. Children can be heard chatting to staff and responding to praise.

For example, children make ...animal masks and staff get down to their level and ask questions, such as 'Have you seen tigers at the zoo?' and 'Wow that's fantastic'. Children's behaviour is excellent, because they understand and are able to talk about the clear rules and expectations. Children explain that there is no shouting or running and understand that this helps to keep them safe.

Children's needs are met quickly, as staff make sure that they are fed and watered, which leads to high levels of engagement in play as children feel cared for and safe. Children learn about their own cultural backgrounds and those of others extremely well. For example, they have recently been exploring their own country's flags, including Ukraine, Poland, England and Portugal.

There is a focus on speaking about family and culture and children are encouraged to celebrate the different home languages and experiences of their friends.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

The provider ensures that the setting is well resourced and activities are planned for all children, taking into account their ages, interests, additional needs and home experiences.All staff have a shared understanding of a very clear set of expectations of themselves and the children they care for.

As a result of this, behaviour is excellent and children understand and can talk about rules and how they keep them safe.The provider promotes children's independence well and encourages all children to make choices about their play, socialising and the food that they eat. As a result, children display confidence, independence and resilience in their play.

The provider promotes healthy eating and reports that children often eat foods at the club that they would not eat at home.Partnership working with the school is very strong, and many of the staff work at the school during the day. This means that staff know individual children and families very well and this leads to a feeling of continuity of care among the children.

Staff are very positive in their interactions with the children. They fill them with praise and this allows children to feel relaxed, chat to each other and play for extended periods of time in activities of their choosing.Parents are very happy with the provision and report that children often do not want to leave.

On the day of the inspection, several children chose to stay when parents offered to collect them early due to adverse weather.Although partnerships with parents are effective, feedback from parents indicates that they would like more information about what has happened during the day. This is currently being reviewed by the provider.

Staff are very knowledgeable about the children's likes and interests and use this information to plan activities effectively. However, the provider recognises that a more varied selection of activities needs to be presented to children in order to further challenge them and encourage them to take risks. This is an ongoing focus in the setting.

Supervision is very effective. All staff know their individual roles and responsibilities, which means that sessions flow seamlessly.The provider is committed to being inclusive to all children but recognises the need for further training in order to better understand how children with a wider range of needs can be best supported.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.All staff understand their responsibilities and duties to keep children safe and have a sound knowledge of the risk factors and signs of concern to look out for. Management has recently renewed staff's safeguarding training and this has meant that there is a greater knowledge of wider safeguarding issues, for example the risk factors and signs of female genital mutilation.
