What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements The manager warmly greets the children as they arrive.

Younger children are collected by staff and arrive eager to play with their friends. Staff create a well-organised environment that children independently access. Children settle quickly and choose an activity to engage in.

Staff know the children well and use this knowledge to plan activities they will enjoy. For example, children explore creative materials to make Christmas angels. They practise various skills as they cut wings from doilies, decorate them and then use glue to stick them onto the pegs.

Staff ensure that the children are an integral part of th...e club by asking them what they would like to do. They contribute to making the 'rules' for the club and, as a result, behaviour is good. Children share resources and encourage others to play with them.

Older children help younger children. For example, they help lift a heavy jug of rice onto the scales. When it tips over, the children laugh and refill the jug together.

Staff are friendly and respectful towards the children in their care. They model how children should be kind to one another. As a result, children learn to make strong friendships and learn good social skills.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

The manager is passionate and dedicated to providing the best possible care to the children. She offers all staff thorough supervision, support and training to help them develop their skills. Staff report feeling valued and part of a caring team.

Overall, this has a positive impact on the quality of the care the children receive.The after-school club is well organised. Staff deploy themselves in different areas of the club, so that children can choose where they would like to play.

They provide a variety of craft resources, which children can access at any time. Younger children enjoy dressing up as their favourite character. Older children enjoy football and group games, such as 'Farmer, Farmer', in the school sports hall.

Space is available for children to relax and have quiet time.Generally, staff support children's understanding of health and hygiene. Children have choices, including fruit, at snack time.

Staff gather information about children's dietary and allergy needs and ensure they are always aware. However, an effective system is not yet in place to ensure all children wash their hands before eating. Therefore, children are not consistently learning about the importance of good hygiene routines.

Children speak very highly of their time at the club. They explain that they enjoy spending time with their friends. Children talk about being able to write on the 'What do you want to do' board.

They know that the staff will always try and plan activities around their interests. This demonstrates that staff value what children have to say.Relationships between staff in the after-school club and the school are good.

Systems are in place for teachers to transfer any messages to club staff. This ensures that lines of communication are clear and that they work together to meet the needs of children.The managers and staff support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

Staff obtain information from parents and work closely with the school to make sure all the children's needs are met. As a result, all children can access the provision.Managers and staff provide opportunities for the children to support their local community.

The children collect food for their local food bank and raise money for their local hospital. Staff from these organisations visit the children to thank them and share how the children have helped.Staff relationships with parents are strong.

Parents are very complimentary about the care that their children receive. They comment on how their children enjoy attending the club. Parents appreciate the monthly newsletters that give them information about what their children are doing.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.The manager has a strong commitment to safeguarding. She ensures staff receive regular safeguarding training and supports their ongoing knowledge in this area.

All staff understand their duty of care to safeguard children. They recognise the signs and symptoms that might indicate a child is at risk from harm or abuse. Staff understand their role concerning the 'Prevent' duty.

Staff understand how to keep children safe. They conduct risk assessments to ensure that areas used by children are safe and suitable for their needs. Robust procedures are in place for collecting children to ensure their safety.
