What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Children enjoy their time at this welcoming holiday club.

They confidently tell staff they are there to have fun, learn new skills and make friends. Children are helpful towards others. They are keen to help staff tidy away resources and hold gates open for their friends.

Staff encourage children to be mindful of others. For example, they remind children that some of the group are new and may need help. To this end, children are vigilant and notice when new children are reluctant to engage in activities.

They kindly invite the children to play a game, so they are not alone. Staff ensure there is an abundance of ph...ysical activities available for all children. For example, children are excited to play a game of football.

They eagerly volunteer to be team leaders and decide who goes first by playing rock, paper, scissors. Staff remind children of the rules and how to play safely. Children show good body control as they safely tackle other children for the ball and try to score goals.

Four-year-olds play a game of throw and catch. Staff support them to cooperate, taking turns throwing the ball to other children in the circle. Children giggle when they miss a catch and have to chase the ball.

They demonstrate good perseverance as they continue to practise their catching skills.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

Managers are reflective and strive to ensure children have fun while being active and keeping safe. The staff know the children and work with parents to ensure any individual needs are communicated and can be accommodated.

Staff say they enjoy their role and receive ongoing training.Staff encourage children to be independent. Children put their rubbish in the bin, choose the activities they wish to engage in and fill their own drinking bottles.

Staff work with children to develop their confidence. They help quieter children to introduce themselves to others and say what they like to play with. This helps children settle quickly and develop early friendships.

Staff ensure all children have access to fresh drinking water and healthy, nutritious meals. They provide a variety of healthy foods for children to choose from and talk to them about the benefits of staying healthy and keeping hydrated. Children apply their own sun cream and confidently tell visitors it is to stop them from getting burned.

The staff help the children to understand how to play safely. For example, four-year-olds want to take part in gymnastics. Staff help them organise the mats and remind children of the importance of removing their shoes and taking beads off from around their necks.

Children are well supervised as they practise their forward rolls and headstands.Staff have high expectations of children's behaviour. Children recite that they must not swear, get angry with others or be unkind.

Any minor incidents of unwanted behaviour are quickly dealt with by staff, and positive behaviour is consistently noticed and praised.Staff provide children with clear instructions before each group activity. This helps children to understand the rules and play fairly.

Staff remind older children to involve the youngest children in activities. However, while the youngest children attempt to join in, they are sometimes forgotten due to the speed of the activity. This sees them lose interest and move away to find alternative pursuits.

Children speak positively about the holiday club and comment the staff are 'nice'. Children state they like playing with the resources and enjoy all the outdoor sports activities. That said, children say there is too much waiting around when staff instigate a change of routine or activities.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.Staff understand their responsibilities to keep children safe. Managers ensure all staff undertake refresher safeguarding training before each holiday club commences.

Staff are aware of the signs and symptoms that indicate a child is at risk of harm. This includes those who may be at risk from radical views. Staff know the procedure to follow should they need to report a concern about a child or a member of staff.

The manager ensures safer recruitment checks are undertaken to confirm the ongoing suitability of those working with children. Children are well supervised, both indoors and outdoors. Managers work with the school to ensure all risk assessments are undertaken, and the environment is safe for children.
