What is it like to attend this early years setting?

This provision meets requirements Staff ensure children are accompanied and arrive happy and safe from their classrooms.

Children are confident in this familiar space. Even the youngest children quickly settle into the engaging activities. There are clear routines in place.

Children understand these and respond well when it is time to get ready for their meal. They understand they must tidy up and go outdoors to play. Staff spend their time interacting with children and joining in their imaginary games.

In turn, children form secure relationships and enjoy their interactions. For example, children easily adopt roles as they pretend to care for the... animals in the pretend vets. Staff skilfully support children's ideas and imaginations.

Staff know children well and plan for their interests. They provide them with the time and space they need to socialise with their friends and relax after school. Children behave well and are considerate of the needs of the youngest children, who confidently play alongside and with the older children.

Staff supervise children well and interact with them as they play outdoors. For example, many of the children are eager to do gymnastics on the grass and others enjoy jumping through the hoops. Staff listen to children and follow their lead by responding to their requests and ideas.

Children demonstrate they have built close relationships with staff, who ensure that children are given the attention they need to support their emotional well-being.

What does the early years setting do well and what does it need to do better?

Significant progress has been made since the last inspection. The leadership and management team place a clear focus on ensuring an ongoing internal review to ensure all legal requirements are met.

This helps to ensure children's health and welfare. All staff now hold a current paediatric first-aid qualification, ensuring there is always a qualified staff member on the premises at all times. There is an effective assigned key-person system to help staff build a close relationship with their assigned key children and their parents.

Staff make time to get to know each child's unique home circumstances, personalities and preferences, specifically focusing on supporting children's emotional well-being. There are strong systems in place to support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. There are well-established partnerships with staff at the on-site school and nursery.

Information is routinely shared to meet children's individual needs. A daily written record between the club, nursery and school staff and parents is shared to ensure they are all up to date about children's care. This strong partnership working also helps staff provide fun activities to build on what children are learning at school and nursery.

Staff provide a substantial, healthy meal for children after school. They ensure breakfast choices are low sugar options and any snacks include fruits and vegetables. Children learn about the benefits of exercise on their bodies and about the importance of cleaning their teeth.

Children enjoy their time at the club. They cooperate and play well together. Outdoor play is popular with children.

They have use of a large playground and thoroughly enjoy being active as they use a range of challenging equipment to test and extend their physical skills. However, staff do not always give enough consideration to how they can extend the opportunities for children to be physical during the winter months. There are effective systems in place to keep parents up to date about the club.

For example, the social media page and club website provides information about the club and updates. Staff consult with parents every term and their feedback surveys are used to adapt the service offered. Feedback from parents shows they are very happy with the recent changes in the level of information they receive about their children's care and time at the club.

They report their children enjoy attending. They add that staff are caring and they are impressed by the range of activities on offer. The deputy manager is capable and ensures the smooth running of the club in the absence of the manager.

The small staff team work well together to offer enjoyable experiences for children. The manager provides ongoing support and guidance to staff to build on their knowledge and skills. Staff benefit from ongoing supervision sessions to support their well-being and help monitor their performance.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. There are effective systems in place to ensure all staff are suitably vetted, inducted and their ongoing suitability assessed. The leadership and management team ensure that safeguarding children remains a clear priority.

For example, staff's knowledge of child protection issues is regularly assessed through regular questioning and testing. There are effective systems in place to ensure that the manager and the headteacher at the school work closely to share information to promote children's welfare. Staff have a strong knowledge of safeguarding issues and ensure all areas used by children are secure and safe.
