Summary of key findings

This is a good provider Senior leaders and governors have addressed most of the weaknesses from the previous inspection. They ensure that students receive the support and teaching required to help them to achieve their qualifications and to prepare them for their future careers. Leaders and managers are ambitious for students and have high expectations for them to achieve places at the most prestigious universities in the country.

They have ensured that a culture of high standards permeates the academy. As a result, most students achieve their aspirational targets and move on to higher education. Leaders and managers have created a secure and inclusive ethos in which students work hard, are ...happy and feel safe.

Students have a high level of respect for teachers and their peers. Most teachers organise learning activities that motivate, engage and inspire students to make good progress. Teachers assess students' progress accurately and regularly through a comprehensive progress-review system and provide useful feedback that helps them to improve.

Most students make consistently strong progress from their different starting points and securely develop skills, knowledge and understanding. Students progress particularly well in biology, economics, physics, psychology, geography and computer science. Staff ensure that the enrichment programme supports students well.

Students discuss and debate topics that help them to develop the attitudes and behaviours that they will need to be successful in their university courses, at work and in their communities. Leaders and managers have not acted quickly enough to improve outcomes for learners in a small minority of A-level subjects. Managers do not monitor the development of students' English and mathematics skills thoroughly enough.

A few teachers do not challenge all students in lessons sufficiently well to help them to achieve their potential.

Information about the provider

Chapeltown Academy is situated on a business park between the towns of Chapeltown and Ecclesfield in the north of Sheffield. The academy was established in 2014 to provide academic study programmes for local people aged 16 to 19 and to foster progression to higher education and apprenticeships.

The academy enrols students from a wide geographical area, with the great majority coming from Chapeltown, Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham and surrounding villages. At the time of the inspection, 230 students were following a range of A levels in English, mathematics, the sciences, humanities, computing, modern foreign languages, law, business, sociology and psychology. Most of the students at the academy are aged 16 to 18, with a small number aged 19.
