Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school The headteacher has created a dynamic leadership team which has a proven ability to improve the quality of teaching and learning throughout the school. Teaching over time has been effective in ensuring that pupils make good progress throughout the school in reading, writing and mathematics. However, attainment and progress in mathematics showed a dip in 2018 to be below average.

Leaders have responded well to the weakness in the teaching of mathematics. Pupils now solve problems of increasing complexity in upper key stage 2. However, this is not as evident in lower key stage 2.

The headteacher has introduced higher expectations for pupils...' behaviour. This has been successful in ensuring that exclusions in the school are now rare. Subject leaders are invested in their areas of responsibility because their roles have been matched to their skills, interests and qualifications.

Leaders have ensured that the curriculum has been organised so that it builds effectively on pupils' skills and prior learning. This results in high-quality work that develops pupils' subject-specific skills and knowledge well. The progress and attainment of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) have markedly improved.

From varying starting points, pupils' books show strong progress in writing and mathematics. Teachers use accurate assessments to plan work that is engaging and relevant. They question pupils well to help them to think more deeply about their learning.

Pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is promoted well through activities that foster a good understanding of others' views and opinions. Children in the early years are nurtured by staff to make good progress in both the Nursery and Reception classes. The proportion of children achieving a good level of development was above the national average in 2018.

Governors are not provided with enough information about the use of pupil premium funding to effectively hold leaders to account. Changes in staffing have affected the quality of phonics teaching in Year 1. As a result, the proportion of pupils achieving the expected standard in the national phonics check is below the national average.
