Summary of key findings for parents and pupils

This is a good school Leaders and governors have a clear and compelling vision for multilingual education, which is shared by staff, parents, carers and pupils alike.

Pupils benefit from a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum. All pupils are taught in English and at least one other European language for the entirety of their time in the school. Teaching is effective overall because teachers use their strong subject knowledge to plan interesting activities that motivate the majority of pupils to try their best.

Pupils achieve well in most year groups and in most subjects. Disadvantaged pupils, the most able and those with special educational needs and/or ...disabilities (SEND) also do well. A small number of pupils, in particular boys in the secondary phase, do not do as well as they could because teaching over time does not meet their needs.

Pupils' behaviour and attendance are good. They are proud to belong to this diverse school community. Pupils respect their teachers, are considerate to others and are polite to visitors.

Safeguarding is effective. Pupils are taught how to stay safe, for example when online. Pupils say that there is someone that they can talk to if they are worried about anything.

Students in the sixth form achieve excellent outcomes as a result of the highly effective teaching that they receive. They play a leading role in the life of the school and are well prepared for their next steps. Children in the Reception class make good progress from their starting points because : teachers create a warm and nurturing climate in which children can learn and flourish.

Governors hold leaders to account for pupils' outcomes and they carefully monitor the school's finances, including additional funding for disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND. However, they have not ensured that the website complies with current requirements. While pupils are well prepared for life in modern Britain, the school's approach to personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is not systematic enough.

Information about this school

The Europa School UK opened in 2012. It was designated to take pupils between the ages of 4 to 19. Until 2017, the school operated as a primary school, educating pupils from the age of 4 to 11.

The school shared a site and some facilities with a secondary school, the European School, Culham. At the end of the academic year 2016/17, the European School closed, and its site and pupils transferred, as planned, to the Europa School UK. Staff in the European School were invited to apply for posts in the Europa School UK with effect from September 2017 through an open recruitment process.

Under half of the current complement of secondary phase teachers worked in the European School. The founding principal retired in 2018. The current acting principal took up her post in September 2018.

In the primary school, pupils are taught for half of the week in English. For the second half of the week, all teaching is conducted in either French, Spanish or German. In the secondary section, pupils follow the European Baccalaureate up to the age of 18.

Some subjects are taught in either French or German. The school does not offer GCSE courses and is exempt from doing so. The proportion of pupils who speak English as an additional language is much higher than the national average.
