Summary of key findings for students

This college is good because: Staff at all levels have been highly effective in securing rapid improvements in students’ achievement. Outcomes are now good and are still rising. Outstanding learning support ensures that students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities achieve particularly well. There are no significant differences in achievement between different groups of students. Teachers make good use of their subject expertise and industrial experience to ensure that students rapidly develop vocational knowledge and practical skills and are well prepared for higher levels of study, further training or employment. Much teaching is good, with examples of outstanding practice. Teachers receive expert support to help them improve their practice further. Managers have strengthened arrangements for performance management and tackle underperformance robustly. Self-assessment is rigorous and accurate and has contributed positively to improvements. Managers have established productive links with a wide range of external partners who offer highly effective training and skills development. This is not yet an outstanding college because: Students’ achievements of functional skills qualifications in English and mathematics are no better than satisfactory. Managers do not know the destinations of enough students leaving the college to evaluate how well courses and training have supported ambitions for progressing to university, further education, employment or training. Teachers’ planning for learning is not always sufficiently clear on how to adapt lesson content, resources or activities to meet the different needs and abilities of all students.
